Iran and Russia Unite in Caucasus Region to Address National Security Interests and Combat Foreign Influence

Iran and Russia discuss cooperation to address Armenia-Azerbaijan issues

During a meeting with Russia’s special envoy for the regulation of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of finding solutions to issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He called for Tehran and Moscow to work together in the Caucasus region to address their mutual interests. Bagheri Kan emphasized that the Caucasus region is a sphere of national security and interests for both Iran and Russia, highlighting the need for collaboration between the two countries.

Bagheri Kani stated that current events in the Caucasus region, including increasing intervention from foreign forces, require strategic coordination and ongoing consultations between Iranian and Russian officials. He also emphasized the importance of maximizing activities within the “3+3” format. Russia’s representative echoed the need for close and continuous interaction and coordination to combat interference by non-regional players.

The “3+3” format is a regional cooperation initiative initiated by Turkey and supported by Russia following the 44-day Karabakh war. It involves participation from three South Caucasian countries (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan) as well as three regional powers (Russia, Turkey, and Iran). Georgia opted not to join due to conflicts with Russia.
