Investing in Science: Gia Lai’s Quest for Sustainable Forest Management and Economic Growth

Gia Lai aims to use scientific methods to rehabilitate dipterocarp forests

In a meeting with the Minister of Science and Technology, Huynh Thanh Dat, the Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee proposed funding for research on the scientific basis for restoring and sustainably managing the dipterocarp forest ecosystem. The aim of the meeting was to discuss ways to organize and manage science, technology, and innovation activities that would solve problems and create economic opportunities in the local community.

Gia Lai Province is closely associated with agriculture, so implementing scientific and technological tasks related to application, research, and transfer is aimed at supporting farmers in farming, growing, and processing. One of the proposals made by Gia Lai Province was to conduct research on the scientific basis for restoring and managing the dipterocarp forest ecosystem. This ecosystem is home to many large mammals and birds, playing an important role in maintaining ecological balance and bringing socio-economic benefits to the region.

In recent years, the dipterocarp forest ecosystem has been exploited without proper scientific management leading to a decline in its area. Gia Lai province along with other regions in Central Highlands have seen a decrease in their forest area emphasizing the need for effective management and protection.

Gia Lai also made other proposals for excavation, research, conservation consulting, promoting value of An Khe Paleolithic relic system. The province has been working on various science and technology projects aimed at improving key products quality competitiveness in agriculture.

Minister Huynh Thanh Dat praised Gia Lai province’s achievements in this field and encouraged continued investment in science
