Investigation Ongoing After Medical Flight Crash at RDU: UNC Health Physician and Pilot Injured

A UNC Health physician and pilot were injured in a small plane crash at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) around 10:15 a.m. near gate 15 on a secondary runway. The incident occurred when the single-engine Socata TBM-700, owned by Medical Air Inc., crashed while taking off from Wilmington.

According to Broadcastify radio traffic, two people were on board the plane, with one of them being entrapped and extrication underway. Emergency responders were immediately called to the scene, resulting in the airfield closure for flight operations at RDU.

UNC Health confirmed that the crashed plane was one of its UNC Air Operations medical planes carrying a physician and a pilot. Both individuals were hospitalized following the crash. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation into the cause of the incident, and WRAL News is actively seeking information regarding this matter.

The airfield closure at RDU would impact inbound and outbound flights until further notice, causing 55 delays at RDU as of 11:30 a.m. Flights were being held at their origin until then, leading to travel disruptions for many passengers at the airport.
