Investigating Rural Health Disparities: TPR and UT Health Science Center Collaborate on Study

In rural communities across the country, there has been a decline in life expectancy compared to urban areas. Dr. Vasan Ramachandran, the founding dean of the University of Texas School of Public Health in San Antonio, is leading an initiative to investigate this change. The Rural Cohort Study aims to understand the medical and non-medical challenges impacting rural health through the use of state-of-the-art technology.

The study involves engaging with individuals from both relatively healthy rural counties and those with high mortality rates to identify factors contributing to health outcomes. By examining both sets of participants, researchers hope to discern why some people fare better in certain rural areas compared to others.

The research team is using cutting-edge technology such as a 52-foot trailer equipped with a fast CT scanner, cardiac ultrasound machine, and a mobile laboratory using artificial intelligence to assess the health of rural populations thoroughly. By understanding the differences between these rural regions, the study hopes to develop strategies that will enhance the health and wellbeing of individuals living there.

This collaboration between TPR and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, known as Science & Medicine, sheds light on innovative research being conducted in San Antonio that has global potential to advance medical practices. Through this partnership, researchers are working towards addressing disparities in health outcomes among rural populations and improving overall public health.
