Interregional Packaging Commission Finalizing Deposit System on Drink Cans for Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels Regions

Areas advocate for further discourse on implementing a deposit for cans

The Flemish, Walloon, and Brussels regions are pushing for the implementation of deposits on drink cans through further negotiations. Despite a lack of political agreement among the environmental ministers, the regions remain committed to their efforts. According to a report in Le Soir, this development has taken place.

The Interregional Packaging Commission (IVC) is now responsible for finalizing the practical details of the system, which is expected to be rolled out by 2025-2026. Previously, Flanders had been at the forefront of this issue, but during a committee meeting on Thursday, a representative from the Flemish Minister of the Environment gave approval for continued negotiations.

The goal is to have everything ready by the end of the year so that legislation can be enacted early next year. If everything goes according to plan, the deposit system could be implemented by 2025 or 2026. However, there are nuances within the Demir cabinet as an agreement has been reached to continue discussions within the interregional packaging committee, although no final decisions have been made yet.

The IVC will continue its work as usual and any decisions will be made by the next government once all work is completed.
