International Traveler Exposes Massachusetts to Measles: Health Department Warns Public and Urges Vaccination

NBC Boston reports that Health authorities issue warning about potential measles exposure in New Hampshire and Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has issued a warning about a possible measles exposure from an international traveler. On June 22, the individual traveled from Boston to Amsterdam while carrying the virus and using public transportation.

According to DPH, exposure to the individual may have occurred on the Dartmouth Coach bus line in Hanover, NH at 11:40 a.m., continuing on to Logan Airport in Boston. From there, the person took Flight KLM6016 to Amsterdam departing from Gate E5.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed that the individual was present in various locations in Hanover, NH between June 20-22. These areas include the Dartmouth College campus, the Hanover Inn, Hanover Scoops, and Lou’s Restaurant and Bakery.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that causes symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes before developing a body rash. Individuals who experience these symptoms should contact their healthcare provider before visiting any healthcare facility.

Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein, MD, PhD emphasized the importance of vaccination in protecting against measles, which has seen an increase in cases and outbreaks globally. He urged unvaccinated individuals to take precautions against the disease.
