The WNBA continues to grow in popularity, with the announcement of its newest team in Toronto. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert revealed that Toronto will be the first international franchise in the league and will begin competing in 2026.
The Toronto team was purchased for $50 million by Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by Larry Tanenbaum. Tanenbaum, who is also the chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, saw an opportunity to bring women’s professional sports to Toronto and recognized the talent and passion in women’s sports.
While the team has not yet been named or given a logo, it is expected that this reveal will come later this year. The addition of Toronto follows the recent expansion of the Golden State Valkyries, showcasing the growth and popularity of the WNBA as new talent emerges from college level.
With interest surging after the 2023-24 NCAA season, fans are eagerly anticipating seeing college stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese transition to professional level play. The rapid expansion of the WNBA reflects increased demand for women’s basketball as Commissioner Engelbert aims to grow the league to 16 teams by 2028.
