As the European elections approach, the PD party is facing a challenge in finalizing the composition of its candidate lists. The general staff aims to complete the process by April 15 so that candidates can begin their campaign in time. However, internal discontent is brewing as many potential candidates are still waiting for their candidacy to be made official before they can plan their electoral campaign.
The party is grappling with several issues, including the potential candidacy of the leader, the positioning of the leader in the field, and the contribution of the ‘civic’ component which could overshadow established names in the Democratic Party. Discussions are underway regarding possible candidacies for various leaders in different constituencies, with Schlein being considered for the Islands and Center, Stefano Bonaccini for North East, Cecilia Strada for North West, and Lucia Annunziata for South.
In addition to these discussions, there is speculation surrounding Bonaccini’s successor as governor of Emilia-Romagna. Michele De Pascale and Vincenzo Colla are being mentioned as potential candidates. Despite these deliberations, debates continue over Marcus Tarquinius’ candidacy due to his stance on conflicts in Ukraine and Middle East. While some party members support Tarquinius’ candidacy, there are concerns among Reformist Base area about its impact on party’s international stance on pacifism.
Despite these challenges and discussions within the party, efforts are being made to ensure a strong and united front for the upcoming European elections campaign.
