Intensive Rescue and Surgery Save Life of Elderly Man with Bleeding Diverticula

Surgical treatment of colon diverticulum bleeding through laparoscopic ligation in a patient with recurrent episodes

Mr. Hung, a 63-year-old man, exhibited symptoms of bloody stools, fatigue, pale skin, rapid pulse, and low blood pressure. He was immediately admitted to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for intensive resuscitation. Doctors provided him with fluids and 4 units of blood to stabilize his condition.

Upon further examination through CT scans and colonoscopy, it was revealed that Mr. Hung’s diverticula in the hepatic flexure were bleeding. Dr. Tran Thanh Binh from the Center for Digestive Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery emphasized the need for immediate intervention to prevent further bleeding and the risk of recurrence. Mr. Hung had previously experienced two hemorrhages, increasing the likelihood of re-bleeding.

Due to the difficulty in locating the bleeding diverticulum, traditional endoscopic treatments with clamping were ineffective. Therefore, the patient underwent endoscopic band ligation of the diverticulum to stop the bleeding. Fortunately, this method proved successful for Mr. Hung, and his condition gradually improved.

Colon diverticular bleeding is a common complication of colon diverticulosis, especially in the elderly population with underlying health conditions. Early treatment is crucial to prevent severe anemia and other complications associated with diverticular bleeding. Dr. Binh emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention for symptoms such as bloody stools, abdominal cramps, rapid pulse, and low blood pressure.

Mr. Hung’s case serves as a reminder of the significance of timely intervention in cases of colonic diverticular bleeding. With proper medical care and treatment, patients like Mr. Hung can recover and resume their normal activities.
