New Dean of the Batten College of Engineering and Technology to Join ODU on August 10th

Old Dominion University is thrilled to welcome Jeffrey Fergus as the new dean of the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, starting on August 10. Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Austin Agho, Ph.D., expressed his excitement about Fergus’s appointment, highlighting his expertise in engineering research and his dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. This appointment aligns with ODU’s mission to create a welcoming environment for faculty, staff, and students.

Currently serving as the associate dean for undergraduate studies and program assessment at Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, Fergus brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He will be succeeding Kenneth Fridley, who has been the interim dean since last August and was recently named vice president for research. Fridley is eagerly anticipating Fergus’s arrival, expressing his confidence that Fergus’s leadership will continue to drive the college’s success in serving its constituents.

With an undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Fergus is well-qualified for this position. His postdoctoral research at the University of Notre Dame has further expanded his knowledge in the field. Fergus has made significant contributions to the engineering community through his research publications and involvement in industry organizations such as the Electrochemical Society and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

Fergus has been actively involved in various research projects focusing on materials for gas turbine engines, batteries, fuel cells, and chemical sensors. His leadership roles in industry organizations showcase his commitment to advancing the field of engineering through education and research. His appointment as dean of the Batten College of Engineering and Technology at ODU marks a new chapter in his career, and the university looks forward to further growth and success under his leadership.
