According to a statement from an IndyStar spokesperson shared with CNN on Tuesday, sports columnist Gregg Doyel will no longer cover the Indiana Fever. This decision comes after an incident during Caitlin Clark’s introduction news conference as the newest member of the WNBA team in April.
During the news conference, Doyel made a gesture with his hands that Clark often used during her college basketball career, prompting a cringeworthy exchange. Clark responded to Doyel’s gesture, and he later made a comment that received criticism. Doyel apologized for his actions in a post on X and in a subsequent column published in the IndyStar.
It is unclear if Doyel will cover the team at all during the season, as Gannett, the parent company of IndyStar, did not respond to inquiries about his future with the team. CNN has reached out to Doyel for comment on the situation.
Meanwhile, Clark and the Fever are set to begin their 25th regular season next Tuesday when they face off against the Connecticut Sun on the road.
