Indian Boxer Nishant Edges Closer to Paris 2024 Olympics with Win at World Qualifier

Quarter-finals feature Ankushita Boro and Nishant Dev

Nishant’s latest victory in the tournament has put him one step closer to securing a Paris 2024 Olympics quota. The Indian boxer defeated home favourite Peerapat Yeasungnoen with a 5-0 unanimous decision, and is now just one victory away from his dream. India has already secured three quotas for the Paris Games through Lovlina Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen, and Preeti Pawar.

The final decision on which athletes will represent India at the Paris Games lies with the National Olympic Committees. India has entered seven men and three women in the second World Olympic Qualifier in hopes of obtaining more quotas. The Thailand meet offers quotas in various weight categories, with Ankushita needing two more wins to secure one.

At the first World Boxing Qualification Tournament in Italy, Indian boxers did not secure any quotas. National champion Arundhuti Choudhary started her campaign in Thailand with a 5-0 victory, while Berwal’s journey ended with a narrow 3-2 loss to Ecuador’s Gerlon Gilmar Congo Chala.

On Thursday, Sachin Siwach, Amit Panghal, Sanjeet, and Jaismine Lamboria will begin their campaigns in their respective weight categories after receiving byes in the opening round. Siwach will face Batuhan Ciftci of Turkey to secure his quarter-final berth.
