Igniting Curiosity: The Transformation of the Museum of Science and Industry

Ken Griffin’s name incorporated into Museum of Science and Industry rebranding | Evening Digest

The Museum of Science and Industry, also known as MSI, is undergoing a significant transformation. This change is in recognition of a generous $125 million donation from Kenneth C. Griffin, the founder of Citadel hedge fund, nearly five years ago. The name change will officially take effect on Sunday, May 19. To commemorate this occasion, admission to the museum located at 5700 S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr. will be free on that day. In addition to the name change, the museum will also be unveiling new exhibits and experiences made possible by Griffin’s donation.

Kenneth C. Griffin’s donation to MSI is the largest in its 91-year history and was first announced in October 2019. Through his time in Chicago, Griffin had been a significant supporter of arts, cultural, and educational institutions in the state. His contributions include $150 million to the University of Chicago’s economics department, $21 million to the Field Museum, as well as contributions to the Art Institute of Chicago and other nonprofits in the city.

Dr. Chevy Humphrey, president and CEO of MSI expressed her deep gratitude to Ken Griffin for his historic and generous investment in the museum’s mission and long-term future. The donation allows MSI to create exhibits geared towards inspiring scientific curiosity and leadership among young people, support science education in schools and communities across Illinois, and spark creative genius in everyone who visits its doors.

The projects funded by Griffin’s donation include the Griffin Studio, a unique digital space where visitors can explore interactive exhibits that encourage collaboration and creativity; “Notes to Neurons,” a multimedia experience that teaches visitors about music’s power through immersive audio technologies; renovations of Henry Crown Space Center; as well as an immersive digital experience created in MSI’s rotunda that promises an out-of-this-world adventure for visitors who dare to explore beyond their limits.

As MSI continues its legacy of igniting curiosity and imagination among its visitors, it looks forward to carrying on with its mission while embracing its new identity – Kenneth C
