Canada and Switzerland Advance to Semifinals at Hockey World Championships

On May 23, 2024, at 01:46 PM ETPRAGUE, Canada emerged victorious over Slovakia in the quarterfinals of the ice hockey world championship with a score of 6-3. Nick Paul was the standout player for Canada, scoring two goals to help secure their spot in the semifinals. Dylan Guenther, Jared McCann, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Brandon Tanev also contributed to Canada’s win with goals and assists.

Canada’s defense was strong from the start as McCann and Dubois found the back of the net early in the opening period, giving them a commanding lead. Despite Slovakia’s Peter Cehlarik scoring a goal later in the period, Canada held on to their advantage. In the second period, Paul scored his second goal into an empty net to extend Canada’s lead to 3-1. Two quick goals by Guenther and Tanev in the third period put Canada in a commanding 5-1 lead.

Slovakia attempted to make a comeback as Milos Kelemen and Marek Hrivik scored to bring the score to 5-3. However, Paul’s second goal sealed victory for Canada.

In another quarterfinal match played on May 23rd Ostrava saw Switzerland eliminate Germany with a score of 3-1. Christoph Bertschy was standout player for Switzerland as he scored two goals while Nico Hischier also found back of net once.

The upcoming quarterfinal matches will see United States face off against Czech Republic in Prague while Sweden takes on Finland in Ostrava as competition heats up between teams vying for a spot in championship finals
