Hunters Reap Big at New Zealand’s Feral Cat Killing Competition, While Feline Eradication Plan Takes Shape and Online Gambling Gains Steam

New Zealand’s feral cat killing competition saw a hunter awarded $608 for killing the largest cat weighing 6.7 kg, with organizers planning to expand the event next year. The competition, which took place in rural North Canterbury, resulted in the deaths of 370 feral cats, as well as wild boars, possums, rats and deer. This year, over 1,500 hunters participated, including 460 children accompanied by adults.

Feral cats are known to prey on endangered birds, bats and lizards and their hunting has pushed some species to the brink of extinction. According to the New Zealand Department of Conservation, they pose a significant threat to native wildlife and spread diseases to livestock. Hunters receive cash prizes for killing the largest feral cat or most feral cats during the event.

The issue of feral cat control is sensitive in New Zealand where nearly half of households have cats as pets. However, conservation groups are advocating for their inclusion in New Zealand’s pest eradication plan by 2050 alongside other pests such as stoats, rats and possums. Online gambling is another topic that has been making headlines recently with various platforms offering slots, bingo and other casino games for real money. Players can enjoy a wide range of online casino games from the comfort of their homes with exciting options and opportunities to win prizes and free spins.
