Jonathan Miles, a Nantucket business owner for over three decades, has witnessed firsthand the importance of short-term rentals in maintaining a high quality of life on the island. As his business grew, providing housing for employees became essential to ensure a reliable workforce. However, the seasonal nature of Nantucket posed a challenge as many employees only stay on the island for a few months each year.

To address this issue, we explored short-term rental options and during the off-season, we utilize our housing for short-term rentals to support our workforce of 32 individuals. While this decision may not result in significant financial gains, it is essential for the operational viability of our business and the local economy. Banning short-term rentals would leave our properties vacant for eight months, jeopardizing not only our livelihoods but also the broader Nantucket economy.

Short-term rentals play a crucial role in sustaining local businesses and preserving the island’s economy. Tourism is a vital pillar of Nantucket’s economy, and eliminating short-term rentals would have severe consequences, hindering spending and undermining the vitality of local businesses.
