How Lambert the Maker Transformed the Arduboy into a Unique and Personalized LED Business Card

Lambert the Maker always had an eye for creativity, which is why when he first laid eyes on the Arduboy, he knew it was the perfect candidate for remixing into a business card. The idea was to replace the OLED screen with an 8×8 LED matrix. Lambert already had a PCB business card for work, but it didn’t serve any purpose other than displaying information. This new Snake-playing card would include their personal details.

The main component of this LED business card is an STM32F0. Programming the LEDs required some finesse, especially due to the maximum current limit of 30 mA through a GPIO pin. The LEDs are run at 20 mA through a limiting resistor, so the code ensures that only one LED is turned on at a time and the previous one is turned off. The entire screen is refreshed every 125 ms, creating the illusion of smooth animation.

In preview videos, you can see versions one and two of the LED business card. Version one was created in 2020 when only green PCBs were offered by the board house along with their assembly service. By 2024, Lambert had expanded his options and opted for red PCBs instead of green ones for version two of his creation – which was thinner than a credit card and featured small buttons instead of capacitive touch pads for input.
