Hotel Barred: Venezuela’s Opposition Faces Obstacles During Campaign

Venezuela’s opposition leader Edmundo González and his campaign manager María Corina Machado were barred from staying at the Recreo Hotel in La Victoria by the government of Nicolás Maduro. This incident is just one of several similar incidents that have occurred since mid-2023, where hotels hosting opposition figures were shut down by the Maduro regime. The closures were often justified by health violations or other allegations.

The closure of the Recreo Hotel was denounced by Carlos Daniel Zapata, an opposition member, who criticized the Maduro dictatorship for preventing Edmundo González and María Corina from staying in La Victoria. According to The Pitazo newspaper, several other similar incidents have occurred since mid-2023, causing disruptions to guests and those participating in opposition events.

Despite these obstacles, González continues his election campaign as he runs against Maduro on July 28th. His candidacy was selected after the candidacies of María Corina and Corina Yoris were blocked by the PUD party. The actions taken by the dictatorship have caused challenges for those opposing the regime in Venezuela, but their campaign continues with determination to challenge Maduro in upcoming elections.
