Today, May 29, at 10:30 a.m., the City of Tampa will honor the contributions of World War II veterans by unveiling and dedicating six new monuments at Veterans Plaza in Jim Walter Park. These monuments are a tribute to the sacrifices made by these brave men and women who played a significant role in shaping our community.
The honorees include Elco Bolton Sr., J.C. Bozeman Sr., David Bryant Sr., Ernest Sims, Donald B. Wilder Sr., and Reginald V. Williams. All of them came from Lincoln Gardens, with the exception of one veteran from Carver City. Their families will be present at the dedication ceremony to celebrate their loved ones’ legacies.
Jim Walter Park serves as a memorial to the veterans and families of World War II who were instrumental in developing modern homes for African Americans in the Carver City area. The establishment of Lincoln Gardens, the first planned Black subdivision in this area in 1948-49, was a direct result of the efforts of these military veterans and families. It is a testament to their commitment and dedication to creating a better future for themselves and their community.
