Honoring Private Wesley Karna: M-26 to be Renamed in His Memory

State Rep. Greg Markkanen has successfully passed a plan to rename a section of M-26 in Houghton County as the Private Wesley Karna Memorial Highway. House Bill 5462 received unanimous support for this initiative, honoring the legacy of Private Karna and recognizing his contribution to maintaining peace in the United States.

Private Karna was born in Painesdale, Michigan in 1922 to Finnish immigrants Erick and Ida. He served in the Fifth Army during World War II and tragically lost his life in the line of duty on September 22, 1944, during a battle in northern Italy against the Gothic Line. Private Karna’s bravery and sacrifice earned him several medals, including the Purple Heart, a WWII Victory medal, and a European Theatre medal.

Rep. Markkanen highlighted Private Karna’s sacrifice at a young age, choosing to serve his country instead of pursuing a typical American dream life. This renaming of the highway is a way to honor Private Karna’s legacy and recognize his contribution to maintaining peace in the United States. During the House Transportation Committee meeting, Private Karna’s great-nephew, Brad Uren, testified alongside Rep. Markkanen. They shared the story of an Italian historian uncovering Private Karna’s canteen with his name scratched on it, leading to further discoveries about his service and sacrifice. The bill is supported by various levels of government and Private Karna’s family and will now move to the State Senate for consideration.

The renaming of this highway serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by brave servicemen like him and highlights their importance in preserving peace for future generations. Through this action, Private Karna’s story and contribution will be preserved for years to come as an inspiration for those who choose to serve their country above all else.
