High Surf and Bacteria Levels Lead to Beach Closures in Los Angeles County

High surf from this year’s El Niño has caused significant erosion at Cabrillo Beach, leading public health officials to identify two more Los Angeles County beaches with high levels of bacteria that pose a risk to swimmers. The entire swim area of Escondido Creek at Escondido State Beach and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro have been deemed dangerous until further notice by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

This means that visitors are advised to stay out of the water at these locations to avoid potential health risks. These two new locations join eight others that were previously identified by the department as beaches where swimming, surfing, and playing in the ocean should be avoided. Unlike warnings issued in the winter and spring that expire 72 hours after rainfall ends, these warnings will remain in place until bacteria levels return to an acceptable level in water tests.
