High Input Costs and Low Market Prices: Farmer Sentiment Drops in Ag Economy Barometer

Ag Economy Barometer experiences a small decrease in June

According to a recent report from Purdue University/CME Group, the Ag Economy Barometer, which measures farmer sentiment, saw a slight decline in June. This decline was noted by Jim Mintert, an ag economist with Purdue’s Center for Commercial Agriculture. The future expectations index fell five points, marking an 11-point drop from the previous year.

Mintert highlighted that respondents to the survey expressed concerns about high input costs and low market prices. He noted that this change in sentiment reflects the challenges facing the agricultural sector. The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer is a nationwide survey that measures the health of the U.S. agricultural economy by collecting data from 400 agricultural producers each month. The survey results provide insight into farmer sentiment and economic trends within the industry. Mintert emphasized the importance of monitoring these factors to better understand the challenges facing farmers in the current economic climate.
