Herbert Pardes, M.D., a prominent figure in the healthcare industry and a strong advocate for academic medicine, medical research, and children’s health education, passed away this week at the age of 89 after battling an illness. Throughout his extensive career, Pardes made significant contributions to the field and held various positions such as director of the National Institute of Mental Health and U.S. Assistant Surgeon General during the Carter and Reagan administrations.
As president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian for 11 years, Pardes was known for his compassionate leadership and dedication to putting patients first. He also served as president of the American Psychiatric Association and was involved in various health policy commissions. In addition to his government and professional roles, Pardes was actively involved in leading healthcare associations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Healthcare Association of New York State.
Pardes’ passion for academic medical centers and their role in education and research was evident in all aspects of his work.
