The Florida State Seminoles faced off against the number one team in the nation on Friday night in a thrilling matchup that went down to the wire. Heading into the ninth inning with a three-run lead, the Seminoles were just one out away from victory. However, a ninth-inning rally from the Tennessee Volunteers resulted in a walk-off defeat for FSU.
The Seminoles’ bullpen, which has been a weak spot all season, once again faltered as the ‘Vols scored four runs in the ninth to secure a 12-11 win. This forced the Seminoles into an elimination game against ACC foe, the Virginia Cavaliers.
Virginia also experienced a heartbreaking walk-off defeat earlier this season and will face off against FSU once again in an elimination game. The two teams played each other twice during regular season, with Virginia winning once and FSU winning twice.
In this elimination game, Virginia will start Jay Woolfolk, who had a strong performance against FSU earlier in the season. The right-hander struck out three batters and allowed just one run in two innings of work. The game is set for a 2 p.m. ET start from Omaha and will be broadcast on ESPN.
