Top Health Concern for Older Americans: Overwhelming Fear of Affording Care

Financial concerns are the top health-related worry for Americans aged 50 and older, according to a recent National Poll on Healthy Aging conducted by the University of Michigan. The survey, which included individuals aged 50 to 101, found that the cost of medical care, homecare or assisted living, prescription drugs, financial scams and fraud, health insurance and dental care were all significant concerns for this demographic.

The survey results revealed that over half of the respondents were very concerned about healthcare costs and financial scams. This concern was consistent across all demographics including age, location, political ideology, race, sex, level of education and income. The authors of the survey highlighted that among the 26 topics assessed in the poll, healthcare costs and financial scams emerged as the top concerns for adults over 50 with far-reaching implications for this age group.
