Harnessing Rooftops: Government Promotes Self-Consumed and Resale of Renewable Energy via Rooftop Solar Power

Deputy Prime Minister encourages research to enable people to sell surplus rooftop solar energy

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has given the Ministry of Industry and Trade a directive to develop a plan to promote the installation of rooftop solar power and storage equipment for resale to EVN. This was discussed during a meeting regarding the draft Decree on the direct electricity trading mechanism between renewable energy generators and large users, as well as policies to encourage self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power.

The proposal for self-consumed rooftop solar power suggests that this type of power be produced and consumed on-site without selling electricity to other entities or the national grid. However, participants suggested allowing individuals to install rooftop solar power to sell excess electricity back to the grid. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the installation of rooftop solar power should be economically viable for individuals while ensuring energy security for the state.

To support individuals in installing rooftop solar power with storage equipment for resale to EVN, financial incentives such as tax breaks, low-interest rates, and cost support are being considered. The goal is to ensure that the state can invest in new power sources based on profits generated from these projects. Simplifying installation procedures and ensuring grid safety for projects in industrial areas are also important considerations.

Currently, there are over 103,000 rooftop solar power projects in Vietnam with a total installed capacity exceeding 9,500 MW. By 2030, it is expected that scale of rooftop solar power will increase by 2,600 MW or reach 50% of office buildings and residential homes. The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of engaging businesses in investing in storage equipment for solar power farms to become a base source during peak electricity demand.

Overall, promoting renewable energy sources like rooftop solar power while ensuring system safety and encouraging investment in storage solutions remains key focus of government policy initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels while maintaining energy security for future generations.
