Hands-On Learning Key to Shaping the Future of Croatian Craftsmanship: Insights from the Croatian Chamber of Crafts

HOK emphasizes the importance of apprenticeship in training new craftsmen

The Croatian Chamber of Crafts (HOK) has emphasized the need for high-quality curricula for craft occupations to shape the future of domestic crafts in Croatia. They have called for a learning-based approach that focuses on work experience to develop skilled craftsmen.

The HOK provided feedback on vocational curricula, recommending the introduction of new curricula, modernization of vocational education, and strengthening work-based learning as a crucial component of quality vocational education. They insisted that apprentices should undergo work-based training with licensed employers, with at least half of the qualification points earned through real work experience.

The HOK also emphasized the importance of clear information about scientific exams as part of the final thesis defense process. They called for greater regulation and inclusion of apprenticeship programs for professions like beauticians and hairdressers.

HOK President Dalibor Kratohvil highlighted the value of hands-on learning in craft workshops for young craftsmen, emphasizing the importance of passing on traditional craft heritage and creating a new generation of skilled Croatian artisans. He noted that there has been an increase in interest in craft occupations and enrollment in vocational programs due to stakeholder collaboration, following HOK’s recommendations.

In the school year 2023/2024, 4,524 students are enrolled in JMO programs, representing a slight increase from previous years. The enrollment policy is evolving to meet recommendations and increase quotas for trade profession enrollment. The positive trend in interest in craft occupations and enrollment in vocational programs underscores the importance of hands-on learning experiences in shaping the future of Croatian craftsmanship.
