On Monday night, the Hampton Roads Convention Center was buzzing with excitement as athletes from different eras were recognized for their achievements. The Peninsula Sports Club hosted the 74th Annual Headliner’s Night to honor local high school and collegiate athletes for their athletic accomplishments as well as their academic contributions. Six high school students were awarded college scholarships during the event.
One of the highlights of the evening was the recognition of Hampton native Tyrod Taylor as the Peninsula Sports Club Sportsperson of the Year. Taylor has had an impressive career in both high school and professional football. He led his high school team, the Hampton Crabbers, to a state title in 2005 and had a remarkable record over four varsity seasons. In college, Taylor played for Virginia Tech and was inducted into the Virginia Tech Hall of Fame. He also won numerous accolades, including being named the ACC Player of the Year in 2010 and leading Virginia Tech to three ACC Championships.
Currently heading into his thirteenth season in the NFL, Taylor is now playing for the New York Jets. He previously won a Super Bowl in 2012 with the Baltimore Ravens and made a Pro-Bowl appearance in 2015 as quarterback for Buffalo Bills. It is clear that Tyrod Taylor has achieved great things throughout his career, and he continues to be an inspiration to many aspiring athletes today.
