Half of New Yorkers Believe Economy is Worsening, Poll Finds; Many Considering Leaving State

Poll shows many New Yorkers are pessimistic about the economy and contemplating moving

A Marist poll has revealed that over half of New Yorkers believe their economy is worsening, with many considering leaving the state. Specifically, 51 percent of respondents expressed that the current economic situation is deteriorating, while 31 percent believe it has remained the same, and 18 percent feel it is improving.

The survey results reflect a divide along party lines, with 71 percent of Republicans indicating a decline in the economy compared to 37 percent of Democrats. Additionally, an overwhelming majority of 81 percent of participants stated that the cost of living in New York is unaffordable.

Despite concerns about the economy, 61 percent of those surveyed plan to stay in the state over the next five years. However, 37 percent are considering leaving New York during the same period, with many citing economic factors as the primary motivation. Among those planning to depart, 58 percent attributed economic reasons as their main cause, while 25 percent mentioned quality of life, 13 percent taxes, 9 percent politics, and 4 percent jobs.

Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, commented on the survey findings by emphasizing the dissatisfaction with the current economic situation in New York and the persistent desire to relocate elsewhere. The poll was conducted from April 8-10 among 1,408 New York adults and has a margin of error of only three percentage points.

In conclusion, these findings indicate that there is a growing sense among New Yorkers that their economy is deteriorating and they are increasingly considering leaving the state due to this dissatisfaction with their quality of life and affordability concerns. It highlights how important economic factors are for many people when deciding where to live or whether to stay in a particular location.

It’s worth noting that despite these findings about half (50%) still plans to stay in NY State which means despite all these challenges many people still want to stay here which could be attributed to various reasons like family ties or job opportunities but it also shows resilience among NYers who have experienced such challenges before like after September 11th attacks or during financial crisis in late noughties or early teens.
