Gunny Remp: A Marine’s Last Wish Fulfilled in Final Moments

Ninety-eight-year-old World War II veteran receives Pennsylvania high school diploma shortly before passing away

In Poolesville, Maryland, American Legion Post 247 recently honored the late Gunnery Sgt. Richard Remp, also known as Gunny. A proud Marine, Gunny served in the military during both World War II and the Vietnam War, earning numerous decorations for his bravery and service. Despite all his accomplishments, there was one thing left on his bucket list: to receive his high school diploma.

Remp had dropped out of high school during his senior year to enlist in the military, and receiving his diploma was a final wish he held dear. With just days to live, his friends desperately reached out to school officials in his hometown of Sharon, Pennsylvania. Sharon City School District Superintendent Justi Glaros took immediate action, expediting the request and personally driving nearly five hours each way to deliver Remp’s diploma to him at his home.

The moment was overwhelming and emotional for all involved. Remp received his diploma just two days before passing away at the age of 98. His friend Julien Singh recalled that receiving the diploma was the last thing Remp remembered, and it brought him great joy and satisfaction. The story of Gunny Remp serves as a touching reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by our military veterans.
