In a major advancement for emergency medical services in DeSoto Parish, ambulances are now equipped with the capability to perform pre-hospital blood transfusions. This new technology, which is only the second ground-based agency in Louisiana to offer this life-saving capability, will significantly improve emergency response and outcomes for patients.
According to Supervisor Gordon Miller of DeSoto EMS, trauma resulting in significant bleeding is the primary cause of preventable death in individuals under the age of 45. This is particularly problematic in rural areas where transport times to the hospital can be longer. With this new equipment on board, paramedics can quickly respond and potentially save lives.
Jared Fry from LifeShare Blood emphasized the significance of blood transfusions and the lack of substitutes. Blood products are crucial for patients who require immediate treatment and cannot wait for a hospital transfusion. The ability to carry blood products on ambulances is a significant advancement in pre-hospital care that will improve outcomes for patients in DeSoto Parish.
Miller estimated that these blood products would be utilized between 10 to 20 times per year, potentially saving the lives of 10 to 20 individuals annually. This new technology represents a major step forward in improving emergency response and outcomes for patients in DeSoto Parish.
