Grooming Resources and Opportunities: Using Barbershops to Bridge Health Disparities in Black and Brown Communities

Local Raleigh barbershop putting customers and community health first

Reggie Winston has a unique approach to working with his clients and is now expanding his focus on their health. Through his non-profit organization, Grooming Resources and Opportunities, Winston and his community partners are addressing health disparities in Black and brown communities by using the barbershop as a platform for intervention. The barbershop setting provides a safe and open space for men to have real conversations about their health and feelings, challenging gender stereotypes.

To further promote health awareness, the Bar Ber Shop hosted a Men’s Health and Wellness fair, offering services such as blood pressure screenings, STD screenings, and mental health check-ins. Clinical Mental Health Counselor Dr. Rodney Harris emphasized the importance of providing these services to tap into the mental health component, contributing to holistic well-being.

Parents like Benetta Thai appreciate the positive impact of getting a fresh haircut on their sons’ self-esteem and overall well-being. Zinfindale Smith, a regular at the Bar Ber Shop, stressed the importance of going to the doctor and asking questions after years of learning fundamental messages at the shop.

The Bar Ber Shop and its community partners are dedicated to promoting health and wellness in their community, organizing various events to provide resources and support. For information on their upcoming events, visit their website.
