Green Protest Greets Science Museum Over Oil and Gas Sponsorship

Science Museum sponsor urges ‘armchair activists’ to step back

A group of activists, led by Greta Thunberg, protested at the Science Museum last month. The group held up a banner with the message: “2024, more droughts and floods – fuelled by Science Museum oil and gas sponsors”. The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition, made up of Extinction Rebellion and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion, raised concerns about the museum’s reputation being tarnished by its oil and gas sponsors.

Sir Ian Blatchford, director and chief executive of the Science Museum Group, emphasized the importance of educating audiences about climate change. He described it as “the defining challenge of our time.” Despite criticism from some activists, Blatchford defended the museum’s decision to accept sponsorship from Adani Green Energy. He stated that the trustees believe in maintaining relationships with companies like Adani Green Energy to promote efforts in reducing carbon emissions.

Despite the controversy surrounding its oil and gas sponsors, the Science Museum remains committed to addressing climate change and educating the public on this critical issue.
