Green Bay’s Kicking Competition Heats Up with the Addition of James Turner: Who Will Win the Starting Job?

Packers acquire K James Turner from waivers

Green Bay’s kicking competition has once again expanded to three participants, with the addition of James Turner to their roster. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, the Packers claimed Turner off waivers from the Lions. The 23-year-old undrafted free agent out of Michigan recently joined the league after playing one season with the Wolverines. Prior to his time at Michigan, he kicked for Louisville from 2019-2022.

During the 2023 season, Turner successfully made 18 out of 21 field goal attempts and set a single-season record at Michigan with 65 made PATs. The Packers recently released kicker Jack Podlesny to make room for Turner on the roster. Alongside Turner, Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph are also vying for the kicker position on the Green Bay team.

With this diverse group of talented players competing for the starting job, the Packers’ coaching staff will have a tough decision to make as they head into the upcoming season. The competition is heating up as each kicker showcases their skills and abilities during practice sessions and preseason games.
