Great River Energy Takes Renewable Energy Efficiency to the Next Level with Heimdall Neurons

Minnesota Company Utilizing Innovative Technology to Boost Power Line Capacity

Great River Energy is revolutionizing the way Minnesota families power their homes by launching a new project aimed at harnessing renewable energy sources more efficiently. The utility has developed a cutting-edge technology called Heimdall Neurons that can be easily installed onto power lines using a drone in just two minutes. These Neurons contain sensors that provide real-time data on factors such as temperature, angle, and wind speed.

Heimdall Power CEO Jorgen Festervoll explains that the Neurons can draw power directly from the line and send data for up to six months in case of a power outage. This technology helps utilities comply with Minnesota’s carbon-free standard by 2040 by providing insights into how much power can flow on a line. By rolling out 52 Neurons this month, Great River Energy hopes to send more power over more lines safely and reliably.

The Heimdall Neurons not only reduce costs for customers but also help crews pinpoint problems on the grid faster during outages and maintenance. This technology allows utilities like Great River Energy to delay capital investments and allocate funds to other important projects. The Neurons provide valuable data that enables utilities to make informed decisions about their power distribution.

Great River Energy conducted a pilot program last year using four Neurons and estimated that the utility could increase capacity by over 40% with this technology. By rolling out 52 Neurons this month, they hope to achieve even greater results and continue leading the way in renewable energy innovation in Minnesota.
