Government announces crackdown on gangmastering after death of laborer; opposition calls it inadequate.

Following the tragic death of Satnam Singh, a laborer from Agro Pontino who passed away due to injuries sustained in a work-related accident, the Meloni government has announced its commitment to combating gangmastering. The announcement was made during a meeting held at the Ministry of Labor, attended by Minister Marina Calderone, Minister Francesco Lollobrigida from Agriculture, as well as trade union and employer representatives.

During the meeting, Minister Calderone emphasized the need to declare war on gangmastering and highlighted its detrimental effects on work and the agricultural sector. Meanwhile, Minister Lollobrigida spoke out against criminalizing the entire agricultural industry due to the actions of a few wrongdoers.

Maria Cristina Caretta, a deputy from Brothers of Italy, supported the government’s initiative to combat gangmastering and reiterated the importance of efficient control systems in the agricultural sector. In contrast, opposition leaders expressed concerns about the government’s actions and called for more effective measures to address exploitation in the countryside.
