Gov. DeWine’s $2.5 Million Scholarship Program Boosts Teen Driver Training Access in Ohio

Teen driver training grant awarded to Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center

The Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center in Chillicothe has received a grant of $72,280 as part of an initiative aimed at increasing access to teen driver training across Ohio. This grant is part of the second round of funding offered through the Drive to Succeed Scholarship Program, which will distribute $2,5 million in total to 35 local school districts and government agencies. The program, launched by Governor DeWine in 2022, aims to provide support to teenage drivers from families that may not have the means to afford driving school costs.

The scholarship program will offer driver training scholarships to approximately 5,500 Ohio students residing in 43 counties. Governor DeWine has expressed his backing for the program, emphasizing the importance of equipping young drivers with the necessary skills to ensure safety on the roads.

Andy Wilson, Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, underscored the significance of driver training, noting that teens who obtain their driver’s license before turning 18 are less likely to be involved in a crash during their first year of having a license. Emily Davidson, OTSO Director, echoed these sentiments and highlighted the critical role that driver training plays in preparing teens for a successful future.

This announcement comes on top of other traffic safety initiatives aimed at young drivers introduced by Governor DeWine earlier this year. These include the Creating Opportunities for Driver Education (CODE) Grant program which serves to expand driver training options in underserved areas.
