Google for Developers Solution Challenge: Empowering University Students to Solve Global Challenges through Innovative Technological Solutions

Get to know the champions of the 2024 student solution challenge

The Google for Developers Solution Challenge is a competition that encourages university students around the world to use their technical skills and Google technology to tackle one or more of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This year, three teams from South Korea, India, and Nigeria were selected as winners for their innovative projects that have benefited their communities.

One of the winning teams is ATTI from Pukyong National University Daeyeon Campus in South Korea. The team focused on addressing the escalating dementia crisis in the country by developing a mobile app called Atti. The app features a friendly voice assistant designed to help individuals with mild dementia manage memory loss, recall important life events and daily routines.

To reach a broad user base across Android and iOS platforms, the team utilized Flutter for developing the app. They also leveraged Firebase for member management and feature development and incorporated Google Cloud features and Gemini API to create the chatbot dialog feature “Atti.” This feature aims to improve communication, promote psychological stability, and support lifestyle patterns for individuals with dementia. The team’s innovative approach aims to enhance the quality of life for those affected by memory loss due to dementia in South Korea.

Another winning team is from India where they used technology in an innovative way to address education inequality in rural areas. They developed an app called ‘Kalyanam’ that helps children access educational resources through mobile devices. The app provides interactive lessons, quizzes, games, and other educational materials tailored to meet the needs of rural children.

The team utilized React Native for developing the app and leveraged Firebase Realtime Database for data storage and synchronization. They also incorporated Google Maps API to provide location-based learning experiences.

Finally, a winning team from Nigeria used technology to address food waste in their community by developing an app called ‘FoodHive.’ The app connects farmers with consumers who want fresh produce by providing real-time updates on available food items at local markets.

The team utilized Python Flask for backend development and AngularJS for frontend development. They also leveraged Firebase Cloud Storage for data storage and Firebase Authentication for user authentication.

Overall, these three winning teams showcased how technology can be used creatively to address some of the most pressing issues facing communities worldwide. Their innovative approaches have inspired many others in their respective countries and beyond to explore new ways of using technology to make a positive impact on society.
