Golfer Dragging Officer in Bizarre Incident Charged with Felony: What Really Happened?

Professional Golfer Scottie Scheffler detained outside PGA Championship

Pro golfer Scottie Scheffler was involved in a bizarre incident where he dragged a uniformed officer to the ground while attempting to drive past the scene of an accident. The Louisville Metro Police Department reported the incident, which occurred on Friday morning.

Scheffler was trying to access the golf course when he was stopped by Detective Bryan Gillis, who was wearing a full police uniform with a yellow reflective rain jacket. Despite the officer’s attempts to give instructions, Scheffler refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground.

As a result of the incident, Detective Gillis suffered pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist and knee, requiring him to be taken to the hospital for further treatment. Scheffler was subsequently charged with felony second-degree assault on a police officer, as well as lesser charges of third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic. He has since been released from custody.

In response to the incident, Scheffler issued a statement saying that he did not mean to disregard instructions and that it was a “big misunderstanding” in the chaotic situation surrounding the crash investigation. CNN’s Eric Levenson also contributed reporting to this post.
