Global South Countries Shun Ukraine Declaration Reaffirming Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity at Burgenstock Summit

Despite the expectation that all countries would support principles such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, more than a dozen countries from the global south refused to sign the declaration reaffirming these principles at the Ukraine summit. Among them were prominent nations like India, South Africa, Mexico, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. The absence of traditionally pro-Western states like Jordan and the United Arab Emirates was also noteworthy.

The reluctance of many countries to take a clear stance on the Ukraine conflict is influenced by deep-seated anti-Americanism and concerns about ruining relationships with Russia. The Western states’ approach to other conflicts, such as the Gaza war, has also led to accusations of double standards and hypocrisy. However, upholding international law principles like the prohibition of violence and territorial integrity should be prioritized.

In many parts of the world, the war in Ukraine is viewed as a conflict between Russia and the West. Some states believe that Russia is only defending itself against NATO encroachment, attributing the war to Ukraine’s alignment with the West. The reluctance to acknowledge Russia as an imperialist power dates back to historical perceptions, despite its colonialist actions in the past.

Many emerging countries did not send a representative to the summit due to concerns about their relationship with Russia or fear of angering other powerful nations in their region. While some countries were afraid of standing up against Russia due to its military might, others simply did not see it as important enough to engage in.

The Bürgenstock summit failed to convince countries like India, Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and others in the global south to support fundamental principles such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
