Global College Protests: From Paris to Milan, Students Demand an End to Israel’s Gaza Offensive

Police evacuate Sciences-Po as Pro-Gaza protests lead to 2,000 arrests in the USA

In Paris, dozens of pro-Palestinian militants occupied the classrooms of Sciences-Po, a prestigious faculty of political science in the Latin Quarter. The police intervened to evacuate them and there were about 50 students present when the raid occurred. The protests against Israel’s war in Gaza had been ongoing for a week and had caused controversies and tensions.

In the US, more than 2,000 arrests have been made in 15 days of protests on university campuses against the war in Gaza. President Joe Biden addressed the protests underway at dozens of universities and emphasized the importance of maintaining civil order. Interventions by police to evict protesters have occurred at UCLA in Los Angeles and Columbia in New York. At UCLA, police in anti-riot gear cleared out a tent city with some reports of rubber bullets being fired.

Protests on at least 40 U.S. college campuses have led to hundreds of arrests, including at Fordham University in New York and MIT in Cambridge. In Canada, university students are also protesting to demand an end to Israel’s offensive in Gaza. Canadian protests are monitored by police but have not yet led to interventions. Meanwhile, a conference on Israel organized by ‘Italia Israel’ association has been canceled at State University Milan due to safety concerns.
