Girls Wrestling and Boys Volleyball Gain Official Recognition by IHSAA, Opening Up New Opportunities for Student Athletes

IHSAA Adds Girls Wrestling and Boys Volleyball as Fully Sanctioned Sports

Girls wrestling and boys volleyball have been recently approved for full recognition by the IHSAA, starting in the upcoming school year. This exciting news means that more students will have the opportunity to participate and compete in these sports, providing a new outlet for athletic expression.

In recent years, girls wrestling has seen significant growth in popularity, with over 1,400 students participating at 177 different schools across the state. Schools in the Tri-State area, such as Mt. Vernon and Reitz High School, have also contributed to this growth. Reitz High School’s wrestling program, led by Coach Scott Ferguson, has experienced great success and is thrilled about gaining full recognition as an IHSAA sport. Coach Ferguson believes that this recognition will further foster the growth of girls wrestling and provide young girls with role models to look up to. Junior Girls Wrestler Lili Greenfield is excited for the sport to continue growing and encourages more girls to give it a try, noting that it is a fun and enriching experience.

Boys volleyball has also been added as an officially sanctioned IHSAA sport, allowing more students to participate and compete in this popular sport starting in the fall season. This decision reflects the IHSAA’s commitment to expanding opportunities for student athletes and promoting diversity in sports. With both girls wrestling and boys volleyball now recognized as official IHSAA sports, students across Indiana will have even more opportunities to pursue their athletic passions and reach their full potential on the field.
