Giants’ Patrick Bailey Placed Back on Concussion Injured List; Marco Luciano Called Up to Provide Infield Depth

Luciano recalled as Bailey returns to concussion IL for Giants

The Giants made a roster move just before their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park on Tuesday. After experiencing cold-like symptoms, Patrick Bailey was placed back on the concussion injured list while Marco Luciano was called up from Triple-A Sacramento to take his spot on the roster.

Bailey had previously suffered a concussion on May 3 after taking a foul tip off the mask. Despite returning from the concussion IL on Saturday, he only played one game before experiencing these symptoms again. There were concerns that these symptoms were actually a recurrence of his concussion, as Bailey had dealt with a concussion last year as well.

Manager Bob Melvin expressed caution in handling Bailey’s situation, given his history with concussions. The team monitored Bailey closely on Monday and again before Tuesday’s game, ultimately deciding to place him back on the IL. With two catchers already on the roster, Luciano was added to provide infield depth. He was one of two position players left in Triple-A who are on the 40-man roster.

The Giants had four recent call-ups in their lineup on Tuesday and Luciano could potentially join them on Wednesday as they continue their series against the Dodgers.
