Germany’s Economy Minister Urges Dialogue in Tariff Tensions with China amid Proposed EU Duties

Germany’s Economy Minister announces that the EU is willing to engage in discussions about tariffs on China, says Reuters.

Germany’s Economy Minister, Robert Habeck, expressed that the European Union is open to discussing tariffs on Chinese exports during his visit to China. This was stated after he held meetings with Chinese officials in Beijing, marking the first visit by a senior European official since the EU proposed hefty duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Habeck emphasized the importance of dialogue between the EU and China regarding tariff issues. He acknowledged the need for open markets but also stressed the importance of a level playing field for fair competition. The EU’s provisional duties are scheduled to take effect by July 4, with a continued investigation until November 2, when definitive duties may be imposed for up to five years.

During his visit, Habeck highlighted the opportunity for negotiations, discussions, and dialogue between the EU and China in the coming months. He conveyed that he believes in the importance of open markets but also emphasized the necessity of addressing the issue of subsidies in a fair and balanced manner.
