Geno Auriemma, the head coach of UConn women’s basketball team, has recently signed a five-year contract extension worth $18.7 million. This deal extends his contract through April 2029, when he will be 75 years old. The athletic director David Benedict described Auriemma as one of the greatest collegiate coaches of all time and highlighted his dedication to the university and state.
Auriemma’s record of 1,213-162, 23 Final Fours, and 11 national championships speaks for itself. Despite a recent championship drought, UConn remains a top program with appearances in three of the last four Final Fours, including this year. Paige Bueckers leads the team as they are poised to compete for another championship next season.
Looking ahead, Auriemma expressed excitement for the future and stated that there is much more to accomplish with his team and staff. He remains committed to the program and is eager for the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead. Auriemma’s accolades include nine-time AP National Coach of the Year and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
