In various French cities, including Paris, Marseille and Rennes, hundreds gathered this afternoon in response to the overwhelming victory of the far-right National Rally in the European elections. Parties, associations and union organizations such as France Insoumise (LFI), the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and the National Union of Students called on the French people to protest against the rise of extreme right in main squares of French cities.

Following the release of first exit polls, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of National Assembly and called for elections on June 30 and July 7. Macron expressed his trust in the French people to make just decisions for themselves and future generations. The victory of National Rally in European elections with 30 MEPs has shifted political landscape in France leading to uncertainty for Macron and his allied parties.

With next presidential elections not scheduled until 2027, possibility of Macron facing ‘cohabitation’, a situation where president and government are of different political groups has emerged. This has occurred three times during Fifth Republic, with last instance being between 1997 and 2002.
