The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) confirmed that the recent Israeli war on Gaza caused more destruction to the cities in the Strip than those in Germany during World War II. The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stated that removing the debris from ongoing Israeli bombings in Gaza will take years. According to Borrell, the only hope left for the residents of Gaza is a ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of respecting international law and protecting civilians.
Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to mediating in the crisis while Egypt warned Israel against invading Rafah and urged for deterrent measures to prevent it. More than 60% of Gaza’s infrastructure was damaged in the conflict, with a significant percentage completely destroyed. Borrell called on Israel to implement measures from the International Court of Justice and ensure the protection of all civilians.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shukri, urged Israel not to take military action in Rafah and emphasized the need to stop the ongoing war and establish a framework for peace. Shukri highlighted the high number of casualties in Gaza and the urgent need to end the conflict and support the establishment of a Palestinian state.
In response to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman expressing frustration with lack agreement in mediation efforts, he called for an end to expected Israeli attack on Rafah. Borrell reiterated his call on Israel to respect international law and protect civilians while highlighting urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to crisis.
