G7 Foreign Ministers Emphasize De-escalation and Unity in Response to Israeli Attack on Iranian Territory and Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

G7 promises support for Israel while pledging assistance for Ukraine

The international community let out a collective sigh of relief when news broke of an Israeli attack on Iranian territory. While the attack was targeted and far from Tehran and sensitive nuclear facilities, it resulted in no casualties. This served as a warning to the ayatollahs, prompting a review of the meeting agenda at the G7 Foreign Ministerial on Capri.

During the meeting, Antonio Tajani emphasized the importance of acting with “common sense” and promoting de-escalation between conflicting parties. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba highlighted the need to accelerate air defense efforts in Ukraine during a dedicated session at the G7 meeting in Capri.

The Israeli raid in Isfahan led to a reevaluation of the meeting’s agenda, with a focus on de-escalation and unity among G7 countries. The ministers warned Tehran against further attacks on Israel and pledged to consider sanctions or other measures if needed. Their goal was to “put out the fire” in the region and work towards peace in the Middle East.

In addition to Iran, another key topic at the G7 meeting was Ukraine’s ongoing war. The ministers committed to supporting Ukrainian defense efforts, including providing air defense systems. Italy’s presidency of the G7 prioritizes achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, stressing self-defense and deterrence against aggression. Military aid will be discussed further at the Foreign Affairs and Defense Council meeting in Luxembourg.
