Fuel Fury: French Motorists Association Launches Online Petition to Cap Gasoline Prices at €1.50/L Amid Economic Uncertainty

The 40 million motorists association has launched an online petition urging the government to implement a fuel tax reform in order to cap the price of a liter of fuel at service stations below €1.50 euros. The prices at gas stations are currently close to €2/L, with a liter of SP95-E10 priced at 1.90 euros, which is the highest in six months. The association believes that this price increase is due to factors such as American overconsumption and the war in Ukraine, leading to an additional cost of over €200 per year for each motorist.

The high fuel prices have had a significant impact on households, affecting their mobility and purchasing power. This situation has become untenable for many French families, prompting the association to launch this campaign for a cap on fuel prices and a reform of fuel taxation. The petition is reminiscent of the Yellow Vest movement in 2018, which gained over a million signatures after starting with a similar call for reduction in prices at the pump.
