Aregawi made a name for himself in the athletic world in 2018, winning gold at the African Youth Games and silver at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games. He also earned bronze at the World U20 championship, marking a significant milestone in his career. The following year, Aregawi’s confidence received a boost when he won the 2019 Great Ethiopian 10km run, coming close to breaking the course record. This victory served as a stepping stone for him as he transitioned into competing at the senior level, where he faced tougher competition and greater challenges.
Despite his achievements, Aregawi has faced some disappointments, narrowly missing out on winning a medal at his debut Olympics with a fourth-place finish in Tokyo. He also fell short of securing his first World Championship medals in Oregon and Budapest, coming close but ultimately not reaching the podium. However, these setbacks only fueled Aregawi’s determination to continue pursuing his goals.
In 2021, Aregawi broke the 5km world record on the road, marking a significant milestone in his career. Additionally, a silver medal at Bathurst further solidified his aspirations of becoming one of the top athletes in his field. Reflecting on his accomplishments, Aregawi expressed gratitude for the valuable experiences gained from his races and multiple gold and bronze medals at National Cross Country events. Despite facing challenges and tough competition, Aregawi remains determined and focused on achieving his goals in the sport he loves.
